Did Freedom Break Our Social Systems?

We optimized our lives for freedom, mobility, and flexibility. But in the process, we quietly dismantled the social systems that once created stability and belonging. But we do have to choose. Both is possible. In this talk, I explore why digital nomadism and remote work can feel both liberating and isolating, and why this is not a personal failure but a structural shift. I will show how belonging is not a feeling but a form of infrastructure, and how we can intentionally rebuild social stability while still embracing mobility, in a world defined by AI and constant change. This talk reframes freedom and offers a more mature model for thriving in the next decade.

Tim Chimoy is the founder of the largest German speaking community for digital nomads and remote solopreneurs. He introduced the topic to the German market in 2013, and his community Citizen Circle recently celebrated its 10 year anniversary. With a background in architecture and community building, Tim works at the intersection of space, belonging, and the future of work. He explores how freedom, technology, and mobility reshape human connection and how we can intentionally design stronger social systems. Beyond Citizen Circle, he builds physical and virtual spaces and advises others on how to create environments where belonging becomes a strategic advantage.
