Digital nomads are often seen as lonely, but in reality, are we perhaps too connected? Many of us end up trapped in echo chambers of familiar faces and similar perspectives. What we truly lack is “Yohaku”—a Japanese concept that values intentional empty space, stillness, reflection, and connection with oneself. Rooted in ideas found in Taoism and Eastern philosophy, Yohaku reminds us that not every moment needs to be filled—that there is deep value in choosing to “do nothing.” At the Hiroshima Setouchi Nomad Fest, instead of packed itineraries, participants work during the day while spending quiet time in nature, engaging with local communities, and simply being present. Through this mindful way of traveling, unexpected cross-cultural encounters emerge beyond mass tourism, helping people reconnect with what truly matters and reflect on how they want to live. In this session, I will share insights and practical perspectives on how digital nomads can intentionally create “Yohaku” in their journeys and design more mindful ways of traveling.

Shokopan (Shoko Hirose) is a copywriter at a global airline, the founder of Digital Nomads Hiroshima, and the host of the Hiroshima Setouchi Nomad Fest—Japan’s first privately funded, nomad-led stay program. Guided by the vision “From tourism to lifestyle,” she designs community-driven experiences that transform journey into a path for personal growth rather than consumption.
